“I am not afraid…I was born to do this”
~ Joan of Arc
This may come as a surprise, but I’m a shy person. It’s never easy for me to perform.
When others watch me perform, they would probably not see that I’m nervous, questioning my abilities and being a perfectionist in my head. But my life has been music, and I do this because I love it.
Many of the songs I’ve written are about women, searching, finding themselves at different points in their lives. I want to sing for them, and for the men who are trying to understand them.
I want to say: “You can be strong and still be loved and cherished. You can be strong at work or in your professional setting but still go home and be gentle and loving, let down your guard.” Finding this balance between strength and gentleness has been such a part of my own life.
I’m thinking of a trip on my Harley to Arizona one cold November a few years ago. I was hell bent on seeing Tombstone. It was 60 degrees when we left, but as we rode through higher elevations the temperature dropped. The drive home was over 200 miles and by then it was only 40 degrees! That’s unbearably chilly on a motorcycle with trucks passing at 70 miles per hour! I’ve never been so cold in my Life. I had to keep saying “I can do this, I can do this” to make it home.
I think almost every woman can relate to this experience, (whether they ride a Harley or push themselves in some other way) and can remember a time when it took everything they had to just make it through the day, through a heartbreak, a loss, or a grueling challenge.
I want people to know me as a person; a heart that feels deeply, loves too much and has been hurt to the core. When I write a song or perform a beautiful lyric, the history of my life becomes tangible in a way that only music can convey.
When I can let go, relax and enjoy the moments of performance, there is no place I would rather be!
